Time plus money are often interchangeable, while they seem to get little in common. Researchers refer to the period of time people spend in an unpleasant mood - when feelings of tension, depression or irritation outweigh feelings of happiness - as the 'U-index'.
For instance, people are seldom in an unpleasant mood while exercising, praying or reading; but disagreeable moods are common while commuting, working and doing housework. Sadly, over the previous 50 years, the complete U-index has hardly budged.
The authors imply that by reapportioning our time in three key areas - commuting, watching television and spending time with loved ones-we can affect our happiness in a more powerful method than money can.
