BRAC, an NGO founded in 1970s, had played a vital role till 2014 in reducing the poverty. The organization followed an encompassing way to alleviate poverty. Following her strong presence in Bangladesh, the NGO had expanded in nine other countries to provide the poor with the services including healthcare, agriculture development, education, and micro loans to run a business.
BRAC founder, Fazle Hasan Abed, was knighted by the British Crown in 2010 for his efforts for social development which has dramatically reduced the poverty level in the country. The organization had its own for-profit social enterprises that generate around 70% of funding for BRAC social development initiatives. This case asks students to examine the business model and strategies pursued by the firm that led to the evolution.
