Bombardier and Alstom: The Acela Express  Case Solution

This case charts the procedure for the souring of the Acela Express, a joint venture of Bombardier and Alstom with Amtrak, the US railroad passenger service. Bombardier and Alstom acquired the contract to install high speed train service between Washington and Boston. Shortly after the start of the Acela, technical difficulties with the train were serious and the relationship with Amtrak of Bombardier became acrimonious.
The case examines the relationship between the various parties, the histories of the firms involved and gifts the technological foundation to the Acela Express. The aim is to emphasize key points in the direction of relationships for large scale undertakings and to investigate several problems in technology licensing.
