Belmont Abbey College was on the brink of closure when a new president took office in the spring of 2004. Enrolment at the private liberal arts faculty had dropped to just over 500 students, and net revenues were inadequate to support ongoing operations. Belmont Abbey College wasn't alone in facing dire fiscal prospects, nevertheless. Higher education in general confronted an array of challenges due to economical situation of prospective pupils and a major decline in the number and radically escalating prices.
