In this case series, Margaret Ballis, soon-to-be graduate of the Darden School of Business, is about to start her dream job at one of the leading investment management firms. On its way to becoming a fund manager, it can not but wonder about its future success. Ballis is trying to assess its ability to consistently outperform the stock market, she doubts that it is generally possible to achieve a stable performance as the fund manager. Using downloaded data from Morningstar, Inc, in 2852 mutual funds, students are encouraged to consider funds that beat the S & P 500 Index tests during the five year period is likely to beat the index over the next five years. Students are asked to look closely at the "hot hand" phenomenon by examining investor reaction to the band, and lead study whether funds that outperformed their peers for several years also outgrow their peers in terms of size.
