The case was developed for use as part of the review in the first year the Technology and Operations Management course at HBS. It offers students the opportunity to discuss the context of the selection of the production process, and then study the real figures of production, resulting in a series of elections. Although not a traditional question case, the discussion should focus on the gap between the theoretical design process and the reality of implementation, the impact of the operator variability of pace and a complex web of activities. Case designed only for one discussion pasture for consideration Hayes-Wheelwright product of the matrix, and the impact of variability on the line performance. Although comparative data are provided for the election process, the hope would be to develop students' intuition about why the numbers vary so much.
To enhance their effectiveness, color cases should be printed in color. "Hide
