Impact of Military Revolution on Birth of Combined Arms Warfare
The military revolution brought up by the World War, had contributed significantly to the development of the combined arms warfare. The saddest part about the World War I is that millions of people had died as a result offline efficient and slowly adapted strategies and tactics of the civilian leaders towards the new weapons developed in 1914 (McLean, 1993). Even after years, the United States and other countries were under the effects of the World War. Despite such miseries, the revolution in military affairs was brought up by the World War I.
A British writer H. G. Wells claimed that the fate of the humanity lies in the hands of “men’s’ increasing power of destruction”. Although Wells was the father of fictional science but he had been observing a real change in the military world, i.e. the technology had revolutionized the combat’s face in the World War I, which has brought unprecedented loss towards the human life as well (Library of Congress, 2018).
The Revolution in Military Affairs are vastly different as they have brought changes in the military’s behavior. Initially the infantry warfare relied upon hand-to-hand combats but World War Imad the use of machine guns more popularized. The machine guns had the capability to bring down the rows of military soldiers even at a long distance from the battlefield. In addition to mines and barbed wires, the development of such weapon made the soldiers’ movement across the open land, very dangerous and difficult, which led to the development of the trench warfare. In 1916, the tanks were introduced by British, which were used for advancement through the use of artillery and airplanes.
The military revolution brought up by the World War I led to different advancements in the science and technology and the modern warfare techniques. The World War contributed to the adoption of the combined arms warfare. These combined warfare changed the whole strategies and tactics usedby the military soldiers. The technology investors or the scientists worked on improving the technology used in wars, in order to provide a cutting edge to the militaryduring the fight. For instance, the airplanes were first used in the World War I. The airplanes were used by the military forces to observe the troops of the enemies. But, by the end of the World War the airplanes were used to drop bombs over the cities and the troops. Not only this, the machine guns were placed in airplanes for shooting the enemy’s planes down (Ducksters.com, 1998).
In addition, the World War I also led to the introduction of tanks. The tanks were used by the soldiers to cross the “No Man’s Land”, between the enemies’ trenches. The tanks were mounted with different cannons and machine guns. Initially developed tanks were not reliable and they hard steering function, but the tanks were made effective till the end of the war. Moreover, the trench warfare was initiated during the World War I. Most of the western front was fought by the troops using the trench warfare. The troops from both sides used to construct long trenches in order to protect their military soldiers form fires and artillery. The trenches covering the enemies’ area were recognized as “No Man’s Land”. A stalemate was created between the opposite sides for years, as a result of the trench warfare. As a result, both the sides did not gain any access to the land. However, the trench warfare resulted in loss of millions of soldiers.
Furthermore, dreadnoughts (the most dangerous and large metal armored ships) were utilized in the World War I. The ships had long range runs installed, which could be used to attack other ships and lands, from very long distances. The main naval battle fought during the World War I, was the Battle of Jutland. Moreover, in order to prevent the food and supplies from reaching to Germany; Allied naval ships were used. The submarines were also launched during the war as a means of naval weapons in the warfare. The submarines were used by the German troops to attack the Allied ships and to sink the ships with the usage of torpedoes.
The military revolutions have brought up a change in the framework of the war, as the new mode of technology has shifted the strategies and tactics used by the soldiers during the warfare. In earlier days, the trench warfare was used but invent of modern artillery made the soldiers adopt combat warfare in maintaining a competitive edge over the enemies. The artillery or the large guns were improve during the World War I, which included the aircraftguns. These guns enabled the troops to shoot down the enemies planes. Some large guns could throw shells towards long distance, i.e. 80 miles, which wasthe reason behind the introduction of major causalities during the world war.
Moreover, the flame throwers were used by the troop sin order to get the enemies out of their trenches. The World War I also led to the introduction chemical based warfare using the chemical weapons. Firstly, the chlorine was used by the German troops in order to poison the unsuspected Allied troops. Later on, both the Allied and the German forces used mustard (dangerous gas) during the fight. But by the end of the war, the troops had availed thegas masks, which made the usage of such weapons less effective. Military leaders.
The technological advancement and the combined arm tactics led to the development of new reconnaissance tactics to be utilized in todays’ battles. These combined warfare were used in the World War II, as the tactics used in the World War I were considered to be very effective by the military leaders.
Conclusively, the military revolution brought up by the World War I, had the greatest impact on the development of the combined arms’ warfare. The war became a source of development of modern artillery and weapons, which were tangible. These advancement made the troops more efficient by providing them combat warfare strategies and tactics. These combined warfare are even importantly for today’s world, as the technological advancement has reached highest levels, and led to launch of world’s largest nuclear powers. In order to remain efficient, effective and proactive; the countriesneed to develop all possible sources of combat warfare to keep their military strong in front of the enemy in order to remain successful...................
