ADAPTIVE LEADERSHIP BOOK REVIEW AND REFLECTION Case Study Solution
What was the plot/story of the book? Give a brief synopsis. This should NOT be an exhaustive retelling of the book. Stick to the high points of the theme or the parts that interested you the most.
This book serves as a roadmap for all the individuals at any level of their position that they want to adaptively lead in response to the rapid and the complex change that is faced by them. However, whatever is the context of the individuals and no matter whether they work in a public or a private organization, most of the individuals face threatened as they face the major challenges surrounding them. However, as a leader an individual always needs to find out a way out of it and the best style to manage that change.
This book is not about leadership but this book is about change management and how change should be handled and managing change requires collaboration and leadership both. This book defined the distinctive theory of adaptive leadership and it tells us about the tools, stories, worksheets, cases and diagrams required for the practical guidance and developing the skills of the individuals as adaptive leaders. Adaptive is the key to this book where the authors of the book compare the companies in today’s business world with the natural world species. The behavior of the companies within the natural environment is described in relation to the natural selection descriptions within the natural world in light of the descriptions laid down by Charles Darwin.
Item 2: What are the main leadership concepts the book addressed?
Adaptive leadership is the main concept that has been addressed by the book and this covers the wide spectrum of all the main styles of leadership. The approach of the authors to the subject matter of the book is different. Four different paths have been taken by the authors for the improvement of the leadership.
In the first path, the diagnosis of the system is explored by the authors and the second path relates to the actions that are required and that need to be taken for implementing the change in the organization and finally the last two parts relate to the separation of the diagnosis from action by focusing on the leaders as the individuals. The authors show how the adaptive leader needs to implement what they have learned during their diagnostic stage to become an effective adaptive leader.
Item 3: Discuss at least one strength and one weakness of the book.
The core strength of this book is that it combines the thinking with experience and diagnosis with action to create a detailed roadmap for the individuals for developing their skills and serving as a learning source for the leaders to become effective leaders. Throughout the book the authors have made a comparison between leading out the change and the observation of a dance floor that is continuously in action.
This book serves as a tool for the leaders as it is full of real life experiences and ideas that help individuals to improve and develop them. On a positive note, this book digs deeper into the cultures and structures of the organizations and the research also shows how the organizations tend to function and solve all sorts of challenges and the problems that are faced by them.
However, on the other hand, the one weakness that I think is a true weakness of the book is that although this book and all of its chapters convey the message that the applied solutions in the past would not solve the value laden complexity of the new problems that are faced by the organizations.
However, it does not state how to mold the solution to match it with the magnitude of the value laden problem that is faced by the organizations. Stories and history presents several examples within the book however, all situations and problems are always different and new and need to be handled in a different manner. Therefore, in my opinion the authors of this book should have set a clear path or criteria or specific steps for developing solutions to the change management problems and all types of the problems faced by the leaders.
Item 4: Did you enjoy the book? Why or why not? Would you recommend it to others?
I really enjoyed reading the book as it moved ahead with each of the parts and the paths set by the authors for approaching the subject matter. This book provides a useful framework that could be used by the managers for adapting themselves with the challenges that they face as a result of the environment in which they operate. This book highlights the manner in which problems should be dealt.
Most of the managers highlight a problem in the light of their own interests because such type of managers always want to ensure that they don’t suffer any loss and that they are not responsible for such problems. Such interpretations can result in conflicts and the authors in this book provide a solution for mitigating such conflicts.
The solution for managers is to understand the political realities of the organization and understand who would be the losers and who would be the winners in the organization. Therefore, based on such strengths of the book I would recommend the managers and individuals in any organization to read this book before intervention. Readers don’t need to read the complete book and they can only read the stuff that is important.
Part 2: Long Book Reflection – Individual Portion
This book helped me to rethink about leadership and how a true leader can manage change. This book lays down the roadmap for all the individuals at any level of the organization for leading adaptively to any kind of change management issue or challenge faced by the managers...................
