Abbott and the AIDS Crisis (C): What Lies Ahead? Harvard Case Solution & Analysis

This is a Darden case study. The partnership between Abbott and the authorities of Tanzania continued to flourish. As a demonstration of Abbott's long-term commitment to Tanzania, in Illinois, its first office opened outside Abbott headquarters in 2007. The new office in Dar es Salaam, headed by Divisional Vice President Christy Wistar, manage the enlarging number of philanthropic projects in Tanzania. In June 2007, Abbott CEO Miles White declared the Abbott Fund's future plans to modernize the 23 regional laboratories across Tanzania and returned for the third time to Tanzania.

By the end of 2007, the Abbott Fund had invested more than $50 million in Tanzania modernizing and strengthening the health care infrastructure and systems countrywide. The Abbott Fund intended to continue its support of organizations and numerous programs that were working to prevent mother-to-child transmission of HIV/AIDS and deliver successful care and treatment to HIV-infected patients. Plans that provided for the basic needs of orphans and vulnerable children in Tanzania and elsewhere in India and Africa were also supported by the Abbott Fund.
