In 2005, USAID and the U.S. President's Emergency Plan for AIDS (PEPFAR), created by Supply Chain Management System (SCMS) for the procurement and distribution of essential medicines and supplies, technical assistance to convert the existing supply chain, and also worked with a countries and global partners to coordinate efforts. The new U.S. Global Health Initiative (GHI) is initialized in 2010, sought to build on these efforts by building platforms and systems. PEPFAR five-year strategy, as a contribution to the GHI, focused on the transition of the program from emergency to sustainable, country-owned efforts.
