Narayana Hrudayalaya Heart Hospital: Cardiac Care for the Poor (A) Harvard Case Solution & Analysis

Describes the mission, vision and strategy of the business team, led by the charismatic heart surgeon who founded a hospital in the heart of Bangalore, India. The purpose of the hospital was to offer health care for the masses. This is a tertiary care hospital performed more than 4,000 surgeries per year (about half in pediatric patients), which is more that holds Cleveland Clinic and Mayo Clinic (ranked # 1 and # 2 in the U.S.) combined. An interesting aspect of the business formula has been its ability to offer complex operations such as coronary artery bypass grafting (popularly known as bypass surgery) for about $ 2000, which is significantly less than other similar-equipped hospitals in India. Its founder is already in other complementary activities, such as the state insurance for rural farmers - Yeshaswini. The founder has ambitious plans for a comprehensive "Walmartization" of health care in India.
