Case compares two U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) programs from the 1970s and 1980s: (1) "stealth" fighter aircraft, capable of evading detection or involvement air defense systems, and (2) the accuracy of attacks, hardened vehicles from "Confrontation" distances, ie, far behind the front lines. Conceived around the same time, guided by the same strategic goal, and initially guided by the same DoD organizations, stealth combat aircraft from an idea to deploy in less than eight years, a striking rate of complex military systems while the system is shown to withstand precision strike on mobile ground targets had not been fully implemented.
