The nature of work is changing: it is more global, more than the team, and more dependent on information technology. Academic researchers have investigated the impact of these changes on the organizational management, technology, and culture, but little attention was paid to the physical environment in which such work. Managers, meanwhile, is trying to cope with the many challenges of designing workspaces to better meet the needs of their organizations, employees and other stakeholders. This introduction to the special issue builds on existing research in the work area to push model, which describes the various impacts and stresses occurring in the work area. It covers the theoretical gaps where additional work needed to understand the role, and the choices made in, the detailed design of organization.
