The base employed Honey Care Africa (Honey Care) updated national honey industry in Kenya, focusing on small-scale farmers across the country. The basis of success was an innovative business model: a synergistic partnership between the development sector, the private sector and rural communities that rely on the core competencies of each party, as well as their complementary roles. This tripartite model combined with local production hives, beekeeping effective teaching and community outreach, and guaranteed markets for small farmers through forward contracts, as well as fast payouts. Four years later, Honey Care has achieved 68% market share in Kenya, distributes several brands of organic, fair trade honey on the international level and is a leading distributor of beeswax. The business model has been successfully replicated in neighboring Tanzania, with plans to expand to Uganda and Sudan. "Hide
