Manager’s Role in Different Phases of project life cycle
The primary goal of the project manager and his team is to complete the project as efficiently as possible by incurring minimum cost and consuming less time while producing the most effective results. The project management life cycle is divided into three phases, which are given below.
- Initiation Phase: This is before the start of the project’s life cycle where the project manager should identify the project's scope and objectives.
Role: The role of the project manager in this phase is to conduct a feasibility study to assess whether the project goal aligns with the organization as well as to determine the project’s feasibility as to whether the company could do the project or whether the company should engage in the project or not. The project manager is responsible for identifying the problem and constraints that could be faced by the corporation if it decides to initiate the project and proposing solutions or recommendations so that the project could initiate.

- Planning Phase: This is the second phase of the project life cycle in which the project manager needs to formulate and implement effective plans that would support the project's successful completion.
Role:The role of project manager in the second phase of the project life cycle is that the manager should develop in-depth and detailed plans for the solution of the problem identified in the earlier phase of the project life cycle. Furthermore, the project manager should develop effective steps to meet the project's objectives to ensure that the project is completed on schedule without any unnecessary delays and also without incurring any unnecessary additional cost. Moreover, the manager needs to identify the amount of work required to be done and the resource necessary for the project while allocating and distributing the workload on the project team. Furthermore, the manager should determine and outline the task, activities, and time frames of the project.
Problems:The primary problem that could be faced by the manager in this phase are the lack of technical and experienced resources. Furthermore, the lack of motivation and drive in the team are other problems which could be faced by the manager.
- Completion Phase: This is the last and final phase of the project life cycle in which the manager need to follow the necessary steps to close the project.
Role:The role of the project manager in this phase of the project is that the manager should hand over the project documents to the organization. The manager should also terminate the contracts with suppliers while releasing the final deliverables to the customers. Furthermore, the manager should release the resources acquired at the start of the project as well as the manager should communicate the completion of the project to the whole stakeholder involved.
