MATTSON PROJECT DELTA (A): A NEW RECIPE FOR INNOVATION Case Solution
Problem Identification
The President and the CEO of the Mattson Company, Steve Gundrum, was looking to improve the innovativeness of the company. Mattson Company is the developer of the new products for the beverage and food industry. The main problems identified within this case are as follows:
Problem # 1
Gundrum was looking forward for the new and the most advanced ideas, which have evolved within the software industry and to bring them to his company. However, the main problem faced by the company was how to bring these ideas to his company and through which method.
Problem # 2
The second problem faced by Gundrum was that would the employees accept this innovative change and do they have the personal characteristics skills in order to function under the new advanced product development methods and manage the processing of his teams.
Most Significant Problem
If we compare both the above identified problems from this case as described above, then it could be said that the most significant and the most important problem is problem # 1. The reason for this is that this is for the first time that Gundrum would be moving his organization away from the traditional hierarchal model for product development to both the open source method and the extreme programming method. Therefore, it is very important to address that whether this would be the best way for the company to innovate in such an industry which is a very slow innovation industry. Moreover, it also needs to be evaluated and assessed that which would be the most important path for the company to implement this innovative change.
Key Stakeholders & Impact of Main Problem on Key Stakeholders
There are many stakeholders of the company which are affected by the above main problem faced by the company. First of all, the management and the employees of the company would be affected by this problem. The management and Gundrum need to identify that whether the organization has the required skill set for making the innovative change successful. Moreover, the employees might not become adaptable to this big change. Traditional hierarchal method of product development has always emphasized on the attitudes of the employees however, these new hierarchal methods focus on high level of skills, team structures and problem solving skills.
Employees might be lacking the technical skills to make this change successful. Lastly, the clients of the company such as P&G, Kraft Foods, Lipton, Kellogg’s and Nestle would also be the other stakeholders who would be affected by the main problem faced by the company. If the Delta Project proves to be successful based on any one of the two innovate methods selected, then this would benefit the clients of the company as well as they would develop more innovative products for these clients............
