Wired Wellington: The Info City Project and the City Link Network Case Solution
The overarching project was called Info City. Information City really consisted of a collection of sub-projects, each focusing on another way in which the city could boost and foster the use of information technology to help move toward the "2020 Vision." Among the sub-projects was called City Link.
A business had lately been formed to bring together a number of parties interested in advancing the project. A telecommunications design was being developed, and strategies for stringing cable were underway. While the project's champion, Richard Naylor, wasn't sure just how the cable would be used by the city's companies, he was assured that once the infrastructure was in place, thoughts for its utilization would readily emerge. This instance provides a setting for exploring the dilemma of cities "competing," much as do businesses, and the manners in which IT can be used in the contest. Additionally raises intriguing social policy questions about who should pay for such an endeavor, who should profit, and so forth.
