Command Performance: County Firefighters Take Charge of the 9/11 Pentagon Emergency Case Solution
When a commercial jetliner intentionally crashed into the southwest wall of this giant authorities landmark, it left a substantial part of the building shaky and began a ferocious fire inside, where--rescuers expected--Pentagon workers might be immobilized but still living. Despite the serious nature of the assault, the emergency response to the catastrophe was directed by a superior political official nor a four star general. Rather, unexpectedly, savings and the result at the Pentagon were directed by James Schwartz, the assistant leader of a county fire department in the State of Virginia. A couple of hours into the crisis, Schwartz was, actually, introduced to US Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld as "the guy who possesses this earth" by one of Rumsfeld's own generals. This case describes many of its crucial turning points and the unprecedented emergency response operation and looks at from a broader viewpoint on national system where power is broadly decentralized. Despite years of training and training, fire officials would face a chain of dilemmas at the Pentagon crisis that had never been foreseen. The case can function as a platform for discussion about inter-jurisdictional co-operation in emergency response and, by extension, co-operation across units of authorities in a broad variety of scenarios.
