Mobil in Aceh, Indonesia (A) Case Solution
It had to be determined by the CEO of Mobil Oil Indonesia, in 1998, on how to react to claims made by several nongovernmental organizations that Mobil had been complicit in serious human rights abuses in Aceh, Indonesia. MOI, created in 1968, was a joint venture between the Indonesian oil company Pertamina and Mobil.
Based in Lhokseumawe, MOI was responsible for managing and setting the conditions of the various contracts with the Indonesian government and Pertamina and for managing and creating the exploitation and investigation operations. As a place, Aceh was far from suitable. But could any of the team at Mobil have envisioned just how challenging handling businesses in Aceh would be?
