The Business Environment of China: Challenges of an Emerging Economic Superpower Case Solution

China is among the oldest continuous cultures in the world, with organized society existing for more than 10,000 years. The extent and rate of change in China within the previous 25 years have been unprecedented in the nation's long history although the country has a complex and dynamic past. This is just the start for China, while these results are notable.

In being the largest country in the world in terms of population, China should create 100 million new jobs by 2013 and quadruple its GDP by 2020 to attain and sustain a decent standard of living for its people. To do so, the state must further open itself to foreign investment, commerce, and the market -oriented ideas that develop its competitiveness as a nation and will excite national productivity. As the revered Michael Porter insists, "Economical progress is gradually built and not spawned from luck” will not grow out of a country's natural endowments, its labor pool, its interest rates, or its currency worth. A country's competitiveness depends upon the ability of its business to innovate and upgrade." Over the last two and a half decades, China has demonstrated its ability to capitalize on its born advantages and make meaningful reforms. Whether the nation can build on these successes to create a long-term competitive advantage under competition remains to be seen.
