In summer of year 2014, Alta Bicycle Share, Inc had just won its subsequent contract to use the Hubway bike sharing system in the cities of Cambridge, Brookline, Boston and Somerville in Eastern Massachusetts. The General Manager of Hubway, Emily Stapleton, was engaged in conversations with project managers from each of the four client municipalities about when and where to enlarge the system.
Growth was on the agenda because Hubway was generally seen as an accomplishment. However the system was facing a number of controlling challenges, the most significant of which was its effort to ensure that docks that were empty and bikes were available when and where needed.
