To capitalize on their efficiency, color cases must be printed in color. Growth and the establishment of AMD's Dresden, Germany production site illustrates how processes develop in an organization, and how those procedures get institutionalized into a culture that is unique. Located in the Free State of Saxony in the eastern part of Germany (the former GDR), AMD's investment in the area leverages a historic and fairly unique ability base in engineering and the sciences, and catalyzes the rebirth and development of one of the leading semiconductor clusters in Europe.
Contrary to conservative wisdom in the semiconductor industry, the Dresden team only reproduced from its home corporate places in United States those process and practice that it felt would work in Germany rather than go after an exact copy strategy. Dresden turns into AMD's only worldwide production location for microprocessors, but the company is encountering with the question of whether it can successfully transplant the tremendously successful culture to other international places because of favorable investment incentives.
