The Real Green IT Machine Harvard Case Solution & Analysis

This is a Darden case study. A big bank is trying to cost justify a proposed, big (60,000 sq. ft.) data center based upon energy savings realized through "green" technology, primarily through water cooling and energy retrieval.

The investments total about $100 million, offset by funds recoup from the closing of an older capacity. The new building is anticipated to open with 700 racks of server computers. The electricity consumed by each rack costs more than the amortized cost of the computers themselves. The bank anticipates a 12% yield on discounted cash flows.
