Cooperation for Advancement Rehabilitation and Education (CARE): Leadership in Social Sector Organizations Harvard Case Solution & Analysis

This case documents the history and growth of philanthropic work in providing quality instruction by CARE (Cooperation for Advancement Rehabilitation and Education) under the leadership of its chairperson, Seema Aziz. Seema began CARE in 1988 as a little voluntary attempt to help the flood victims of the Sheikhupura town, Lahore (Pakistan) and afterwards directed the organization's focus towards providing quality education to underprivileged children. In the month of September 2002, the government of Punjab presented CARE to assume another 140 government schools.

Nonetheless, it had invited challenges related to managing a fast growing organization, providing for additional capital and other organizational resources, and establishing a professional and well driven Human Resource base to support the expansion determination which would need to be taken within a month or two. On the other hand, refusing the government's offer would empower Seema to take CARE through a gradual procedure for growth ensuring control over policymaking and execution, minimizing hazards associated with fiscal sustainability, building organizational and human resource capacities and above all preparing direction abilities necessary for an increasing organization. For Seema it was really a tough decision. She felt that as she considered the offer to prepare the challenge to be taken up by CARE, thousands of kids lost expectation for the opportunity and fundamental education to live like the privileged part of the society. While Seema's heart was really tempted to take up the offer of the government, her mind was well aware that she must select her options sensibly.
