A City’s Desert: No Apples in the Big Apple? (B) Harvard Case Solution & Analysis

The New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene's Physical Activity and Nutrition Program needed to think of an advanced solution to the many health problems, for example obesity, diabetes, and heart disease that harassed residents of poorer places in the city, while raising economic chance for neighborhood residents. The result was the launching of Green Handcarts, a fresh mobile food vending initiative to support the introduction of healthier food alternatives to the populace of "food deserts" in the New York City district.

The challenge was navigating the different landscape of players and engaging all of the imperative stakeholders to think of a solution that was both viable and sustainable. This case represent how strategic alliances and partnership can be utilized to get major social collision. The beauty of this illustration is that it concurrently deal with two big social dilemmas: 1) accessibility to healthful food options in urban food deserts and 2) creating self-employment opportunities for members of disadvantaged communities. This case also illustrates the way the public sector can act as social innovators.
