SEPIL must not only finish the endeavor, but must do so in a manner consistent with its own principles of corporate social responsibility. This case offers the opportunity to explore the challenges implicit in using stakeholder management strategies.
Students must evaluate various options available to SEPIL such as: Should the petrol be processed at sea, as the more strident protestors demand? Should the processing facility be relocated to a place of no habitation, as other protestors want, which might mean writing off a substantial investment? For that matter, is this project worth completing at any cost? Eventually, despite having all the essential statutory approvals, closing implementation would probably demand utilizing the Garda Siochana (the Irish national police force) and other resources of the Irish State, as well as Shell's own contract security force, to keep protestors at bay. However, what are the potential effects of what if anything, something, goes wrong, and such action on Shell's corporate standing? It is not only which course of action SEPIL picks to undertake, but how the activity is executed, that matters.
