Sport is big business around the world. Within the sports business, association football - usually known as "football" around the planet or "soccer" in North America - is thought to be the world's wealthiest sport and is often touted as the "king of sport" or the "most popular sport on earth."
The scope of this note will be to supply the reader with a simple and concise overview of association football, the stakeholders the governing bodies and other things involved, their rights and obligations, their primary activities, financing sources, and funds distribution. The initial part is dedicated to FIFA and the IFAB, both international entities governing and regulating world association football; the second part provides insights into each continental confederation; and other stakeholders that act either on a localized or international level are denoted by the final part.
