This procedure is still generally considered to be inefficient and problematic. Necessities to the new product and service development process is that new knowledge has to be developed, preserved, and implemented across the entire R&D commercialization spectrum. While a lot of knowledge is usually created, much is also lost as endeavors traverse through the many distinct phases of the process. The prevalent view is the fact that information technology systems help decrease knowledge loss, but current solutions fall short, leaving openings or chasms in which knowledge is lost or translated in a manner that diffuses or redirects the original intention. Through a study of 146 firms, we emphasize management chances to redress this problem and identify five main areas of knowledge loss. Eventually, we explain and propose a content management model for R&D as a new solution framework.
