The director of logistics at Walmart Canada, was developing strategies for a new distribution center in Alberta. Senior management had presented her with a challenge: why not assemble the most sustainable distribution center on the planet? Yet, much stayed uncertain about the best way to translate this challenge into particular activities, while keeping in mind corporate aims for sustainability.
Her team now was investigating three alternatives that promised to be greener: hydrogen fuel cells for renewable energy generation, LED lighting and forklift trucks from on-site wind turbines. Any investment in these technologies that are sustainable had to make business sense and the managing performance in the distribution center could radically affect.
