Andrea Ruma has worked for three years at Ruma's Fruit and Gift Basket (Ruma's), a 112- year- old family business in Massachusetts. Andrea is attempting to determine whether she will remain in the company or leave to return to teaching. The trouble for Andrea is that her dad, Jim Ruma, would not divide any information on sequence planning, finances, estate planning, or the business strategy, nor provide any comments on whether she is doing a good job to her.
He is an active and opportunistic businessman although Jim is 72 years old. In the past twenty years, he has entered five new business areas, all with no preparation and has gotten out of the wholesale fruit business. Even though the company is rewarding and offers four family members with good income, Andrea has doubts as to whether she should commit to the company together with the notion of possibly taking over the business as the sole feasible fourth generation family member.
