The case scenario discusses the work of Samsung's Product Innovation Team in Europe region, the PIT EU, founded in the year 2010 to fuel consumer-spurred innovation (as opposed to the technology-driven innovation).By 2013, jobs created by the team had put an estimated half a billion dollars to Samsung's profits.Among other issues, the case describes the way the team works to find new and invaluable insights by examining consumers, how they create useful metrics for invention, and the way they "sell" their thoughts to the rest of the firm (a frequent problem for invention units).
The case also describes a program for transferring data to Samsung cellphones, three of their invention projects in detail: a new function for video camcorders, and a radical new kind of refrigerator. The Teaching Note contains a PowerPoint deck with visuals and details on the team set up Samsung and the three projects. The slides also comprise video footage that can be demonstrated in the class.
