Having around 35 boats that are available all the year and passenger services to the 47 West Coast terminals, BC Ferries is located in Victoria, British Columbia. On March 22, 2006, one BC Ferries' boats, Gil Island was, hit by the Queen of the North, causing death of two passengers and causing irreversible damage to sensitive coastal marine areas.
On May 13, 2013, Karl Lilgert, the navigation officer of the Queen of the North, was charged with criminal negligence and sentenced to four years in penitentiary. Despite the ending of the trial and years of investigations, questions still remain unanswered about what occurred on the tragic night of the boat's sinking.
