Oral Rehydration Therapy Harvard Case Solution & Analysis

This case emphasizes the puzzlingly high levels of diarrhea-related child mortality in developing countries, despite the availability of simple and effective treatment: oral rehydration therapy (ORT). ORT considered extreme dehydration caused by diarrhea, which was one of the leading causes of death among young children in developing countries, particularly in Africa and Asia. Announced in 1970 as one of the most important medical advances of the 20th century, ORT helped reduce diarrhea-related child mortality rate from about 4.5 million in 1980 to 1.5 million in 2000. However, for reasons unclear global public health, mortality stood at around 1.5 million, where it remained in 2010. Representing the problem of diarrhea-related death, ORT solution is presented, and the various factors potentially influencing ORT use case allows students to analyze the possible reasons for the low use of ORT and possible measures to address them.
