Politics in organizations are a truth of life, and have been regarded as such for decades by organizational scientists and practitioners alike. Regrettably, much less is known about the skills or competences needed in order to be successful-- and survive--in such political surroundings. Although many consider performance, effectiveness, and career success are determined mostly by intelligence and hard work, political perspectives on organizations claim that other variables including positioning, societal astuteness, and interpersonal savvy also play significant parts; that is, individuals must possess political skill.
In this article, we assert that it allows individuals to be powerful at work by giving them the capacity to effectively capitalize on those chances and to more accurately recognize opportunities in the work environment, and describe the underlying attributes and functioning of political skill in organizations. Utilizing the game of chess as a metaphor, we describe how politically proficient people strategically apply their competencies in ways that ensure goal attainment. Further, we provide some practical guidance for employees about how to play the organizational politics 'game' to ease success.
