Most of the domestic violence occurs between intimate partners, any member of a family or in a relationship. The theory explains that children getting abused in their early childhood or by the violent behaviors of their fathers, will surely repeat the same with their children. Similarly, children who have seen their mothers being abused by their fathers, are expected to repeat the same with their wives. The theory clearly highlights the fact that childhood is the age where children learn the most and that learning leaves a concrete mark on their minds. From the examples, children witnessing violence in earlier ages are more likely to repeat the same in their relationships.

Bandura explains through this theory that as positive behaviors are intimated similarly negative behaviors are also intimated and people acquire violent and aggressive habits from their elders. These aggressive behaviors contribute towards family violence and as stated by many writers, social learning theory explains many key aspects of family violence. These aspects include, children observing violence in families form a pattern to practice violence as an adult, the aggressive and violent behaviors are transmitted from one generation to another, generalizing the aggressive behaviors in changing relationships from time to time and the continuity of practicing violence in a marital life. The reason social theory explains that people in their early childhood learn violence and aggressive behaviors that they practice in their adulthood towards their children and spouse.

Family is the place where children learn the most and a child witnessing abusive behavior will definitely practice it again in his life as a father or as a husband as explained in this theory. The social learning theory gives birth to many new theories that explains the reasons that are prominent in encouraging domestic violence. Besides family, culture also plays an important role towards the learning of a child. A child learns different norms and values from the sub-culture groups and practice them as an adult. These practices then guide the child to believe that what he has seen in his childhood was correct and he should practice the same in treating his wife and children.
