The authors argue that in our highly-connected environment, it is all too easy to forget how important it is an "internal affair of life" is the progress of the organization: when one goes down, so does the other. They define the inner life of work that consists of each employee's emotions, perceptions, and motivation - and to show that leaders can not influence their subordinates inner life work on a daily basis. The only question, they say, is that the direction of this effect will be. They describe three key "authorities" inner work life, and to show how managers can use them to contribute to productivity and prosperity.
