Long-term trend of production management to "best practice" was preferred Japanese production system as a means of creating industrial success. While commentators have noted the lack of correlation between imitation and competitive advantage, one of the reasons for this failure, namely - a very range of techniques among Japanese manufacturers - has not been as fully explored. This article uses data from the UK automotive industry to illustrate the impact of disappointment Japanization and best practice, and it suggests that managers should focus on the development of strategic competencies and coordination of production with corporate strategy.
