Introduction:
The film is based on a real life incident happened with the rugby team of Uruguay, the team was travelling to Chile together with some of their friends and family members on a private jet owned by the armed forces of Uruguay. The plane was crashed in the mountains of Andes which were covered by snow completely, the weather was very harshand at night the temperature was 40 degrees below the freezing point. Out of 45,27 people survived the plane crash, the initial days werenot very tough for the survivors as they hadsome chocolates and a couple of bottles of wine with them and were also expecting the arrival of rescue teams which was giving some hope to them.
However, the rescue teams didn’t find them out and the food was entirely consumed. The situation was becoming worst for them.Finally, in order to survive Nando gavethe idea of eating the flesh of their dead colleagues. This idea was rejected initially however, all the individuals agreedto eat their dead colleagues as they realized it as necessary. Apart from the shortage of food, they also faced some brutal avalanches in which the captain of their rugby team passed away. After facing this tough situation, Nando and Canessa decided to cross the mountains and bring the rescue teams, they succeeded in their mission and almost 16 peoples were rescued.
Planning:
Effective planning is one of the most significant factors in the success of survival, it can be said that the planning of the members is effective to some extent and was also very poor on some instances. The plan to bring rescue team by escaping the mountains is perfect but the strategy could have been arranged in a better way. Furthermore, the plan to eat the dead is also right because it was necessary for the survival and without eating it was not possible to survive. On the other hand, the planning was very poor especially in the consumption of food, they consumed all of the chocolates and wines in a single night.After the first round of rescue teams, it can be argued that some of the loss of human lives is due to this ineffective planning. In addition to this, they should have prepared mentally and physically regarding the occurrence of an avalanche as they are quite frequent in these weather conditions. If theyhad prepared for the avalanche, the lives of few deceased people would be saved such as Lilianna and Federico.
Reactions:
The reaction of some of the characters is effective while the reaction of many is ineffective, many of the individuals were not taking the situation seriously which result in the loss of precious human lives. Moreover, the members of the crashed plane were also not together on one decision, some of them were insisting to wait for the rescue team while some of them were insisting to escape the Andes Mountains. The reaction of Tintin, Nando and Carlitos is an effectiveone while Canessa is also very effective on most of the instances. One character which seems to be very positive is Federico, he doesn’t lose hope and remained confident till his last breath.
Climatic conditions:
The climatic conditions were very harsh, there were frequent interruptions in the shooting of the film, and the minimum weather that had been recorded during the shooting was 25 degrees below the freezing point. (Avins, 1993)The actors and the production crew faced severe health risks during the shooting of the movie while Ethan Hawke and Josh Hamilton particularly faced higher injury issues during the filming of scenes of escaping the Andes. The film was to beshot in the conditions in which snow fall was at its peak which is the main reason for these severe injury issues.
The climate was the biggest issue in the shooting of the movie, there were frequent avalanches and the crew could not shoot for the whole day due to the absence of sunlight. The help of professional survivors was taken in managing the shooting of the film and the help of armed forces was sought in the filming as well. The injured crew members were provided with all the first aid treatments available and the serious injured crew members and actors were taken to the hospitals immediately.
