Managing Organizational Transformation: Lessons from the Veterans Health Administration Harvard Case Solution & Analysis

Management of organizational transformation is risky and difficult business. This article discusses the lessons learned from the transformation of Veterans Health Administration (VHA), one of the largest agencies in the federal government. Conversion, which is very successful, focused on changing the agency from the delivery of the health system emphasizing stationary oriented tertiary care in the delivery of health care system that can meet the growing needs of veterans for outpatient-oriented primary health care. Experience shows, VHA on the importance of selecting leaders whose qualifications meet the needs change, the development of a coordinated plan for transformation, keeping the focus on the key objectives of the reforms and changes in the management of external supplement domestic. In addition, VHA experience reminds us that transformation often raises important issues regarding training and education, communication with frontline staff, and the balance between centralized control and flexibility of the operating unit.
