In October 2001, NTT DoCoMo, Japan's leading mobile telecommunications company, has launched the world's first commercial third generation (3G) mobile communications. However, the new service encountered technological obstacles. Many observers were skeptical of its future success. But 3G in Japan was only the first step in an ambitious plan DoCoMo to its standards of 3G technology and services are installed worldwide. By late 2001, DoCoMo created alliances with major players in telecommunications in Asia, Europe and the United States to develop the network 3G. Despite technological failures and astronomical fee for a license to operate 3G in some European countries, DoCoMo and its partners continue to build the infrastructure for a new generation of services.
