The resignation of Senator Trent Lott of Mississippi with the majority leader post was an event unprecedented in the history of the U.S. Senate. It happened quickly, as a result of the comments he made at the event, which was not expected, the dispute-100 Birthday Party oldest member of the Senate, South Carolina Senator Strom Thurmond. Lott's remarks, in which he praised the 1948 Thurmond run for president as the candidate of segregation Dixiecrat Party, only gradually caused a storm, however. This case tells the story of how the controversy grew, with special emphasis on the role of non-traditional media, particularly on the role of political writers, who distributed their views through the "web log." The case is described as the story spread from Lotta keyboards these "bloggers" to more mainstream print and television news to the point at which public pressure resulted in the resignation of the leadership of the Senate with Lott. This case allows for discussion of the evolution of the press, and the new electronic media contributed to the efforts of a range of voices to reach a wider public, as well as the life cycle, which some have called press feeding frenzy, in which the fate of key government officials or political issues, it would seem, be kind dramatic scenario, since they are central to the reporting time. The case can be used either by those with a special interest in the ways in which government officials dealing with the press, or those with a particular interest in the internal dynamics of the media.
