Environmental scanning systems are useless in terms of strategic inflection point - dangerous quantum changes in the competitive environment. Top management and strategic planning is not enough will and intuition, respectively, to address these points, the system will not detect it. Most often, however, the system just can not see them at all. This requires the synthesis, which can only be provided by line managers who have the right intuition, because day-to-day contact with the real world, and access to unfiltered information, because of their humble station in the corporate hierarchy.
